DAYTONA (FBW)—Central Florida Raceway ministry volunteers have about 10 seconds with most race fans to influence them with the Gospel, according to Grey Scofield, ministry chairman.

Volunteers learn with each passing year how to make the most of their contacts with the fans.

“We want to go out and tell the people we care and that Jesus loves them,” Scofield said. “We just want to serve.”

Since moving to Graceville in 1968 to teach at what was then Baptist Bible Institute, but now the Baptist College of Florida, I have been privileged to serve in 47 interim pastorates in some 35 different churches. Serving in churches as diverse as small rural to large urban fellowship has provided the opportunity to observe Baptists in varying contexts. One unique aspect stands out. In three different churches there has been one man who voted in the negative on nearly every issue at every business meeting. The reaction in all three churches was the same. “Aw, don’t worry about it preacher. He’s just trying to be different.” Sometimes we are better off to ignore differences, but if we cannot we must strive to understand them.
