WEST PALM BEACH (FBW)-Sidney Lanier, 79, member of the board of directors of Florida Baptist Witness and former member of the Florida Baptist State Board of Missions, died July 11.
Randy Huckabee, pastor of First Baptist Church in Okeechobee, and a member of Witness board of directors who has served alongside Lanier on both the Witness board and the State Board of Missions, said it was a “joy” to serve with one who offered wisdom and insight.
“Sidney is a model layman and will be sorely missed,” Huckabee said. “His years of service to the State Board and Witness were exemplary.”
Lanier, a veteran of the United States Air Force who served as a State Trooper with Florida Highway Patrol for 30 years, served the board of directors of Florida Baptist Witness from 2008-2011, and was serving another term at the time of death.
He served on the Florida Baptist Convention’s State Board of Missions 2001-2004, and 2004-2007. He also served as chairman and vice-chairman of the Committee on Resolutions, and as a member of the Committee on Nominations.
Lanier is survived by his wife, Cecile, of 59 years, who is well known to Florida Baptists. He is also survived by two daughters, Pamela (Scott) Lanier Wilson and Cynthia (Dan) Lanier Johnson; grandchildren Ashley, Kenneth (Rose) and Amber; and great grandson, Michael.
Visitation for the family is scheduled July 21, 2-3 p.m., and the funeral at 3 p.m. at Village Baptist Church in West Palm Beach.
