My conversation with Jacksonville foster parents

It’s hard to look at the sheer number of children in foster care and not have your heart break a little. I know mine does. Julie Bruce, director of foster care at the Florida Baptist Children’s Homes Jacksonville campus, said the need for foster parents is critical. With more than 12,000 children currently in foster homes, Bruce is always willing to talk to families who want to find out more about being a foster parent. Bruce said ...

FIRST PERSON: What happens when foster kids come to church

EDITOR'S NOTE: Diana Davis' column is part of a Special Report that the April print edition of the Florida Baptist Witness will have on orphan care. To subscribe, go here: https://www.sonovasystems.com/css/1012/epay.page "The Turners have a new foster child," someone whispered. A wide-eyed 12-year-old walked into church beside the couple, and people began to welcome him. When God prompts someone in your church to foster a child, how will your church respond? Are ...

Orphan care helps Florida Baptists build more diverse congregations

Adoption and foster care cross ethnic and cultural lines, and while that may be a challenge it is also an opportunity. Florida Southern Baptist churches are discovering that by being involved in adoption and foster care ministries they are becoming multicultural themselves, or growing their current multicultural ministries even further. “As a church with so many people who have fostered children and adopted children the ethnic makeup of the church has changed,” said Pastor Jamin Stinziano of ...

Winston Wolfe of Memphis donated $500,000. The trio are longtime supporters of ABCHomes. Part of the Bonner's donation will help the organization meet the needs of foster children and provide startup money for ...

Christmas marks 2nd anniversary for family of adopted kids

As Christians worldwide prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus, one Kentucky couple reflects on the day they say God stitched together their Christmas gift of a new family. On Dec. 18, Sam and Stephanie Patterson will mark the second anniversary of the day they adopted four siblings from foster care. "That's our 'forever family' day," said Stephanie, a music ministry associate at Little Flock Baptist Church in Shepherdsville, Ky., just south of Louisville. More than 8,000 children are in the care ...

Thanksgiving holiday sweetened by Baptist children’s homes

In one Tennessee household, this year’s Thanksgiving table will include an unusual centerpiece: the letters Y-E-S made of black pressed wood. With a new 10-year-old daughter in their house, Jennifer and Rusty plan to place the letters on their table as a reminder of what God does when believers say “yes” to His will without knowing precisely where He’s leading. For them, saying yes led to adopting a child through the Tennessee Baptist Children&...
