Every job or place of ministry has downsides. Don’t get me wrong. This is the best “job” I have ever had. I still like coming to work! However, most ministers live between “Thank you, Jesus” and “God have mercy.”
Recently, I almost rammed the bumper in front of me on the way home. My mind was preoccupied with some deep thoughts and, I confess, some mild anger. Or was it mild thoughts and deep anger? It was at least righteous indignation.

A recent article published in the Florida Baptist Witness detailed an account of the moderate use of alcoholic beverages among followers of Christ, including preachers. I take issue with the premise. My conviction is there is no place in the Christian growth and walk that includes the use of wine or any other alcoholic beverage. In fact, after 59 years of ministry, there is not one time I recall the positive value of alcohol use.

Dr. Glen Owens has been the assistant executive director of the Florida Baptist Convention for 25 years this coming December. Prior to that we worked together for close to five years at Broadmoor Baptist Church in Shreveport, La, where he served as the church administrator.

I have revisited some Cooperative Program materials in preparation for this article, including a profile produced in February by a study group of state and national leaders.
In this report, the study group defined the Cooperative Program or CP as: “Southern Baptists’ unified plan of giving through which cooperating Southern Baptists gives a percentage of their undesignated receipts in support of their respective state convention and the Southern Baptist Convention missions and ministries.” The definition referenced an identical one published in the SBC Annual in 1960 and 2007.

It was my joy to be a member of the Ad-Hoc Cooperative Program Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention which made a final report in February 2006. We spent many hours in prayer and study, creating an excellent report.

The State Board of Missions honored Nancy and me with a dinner and reception on Thursday night, Feb. 6 to celebrate our 25th year serving Florida Baptists. It was a wonderful event. Many worked hard in planning and executing the time together.

What a wonderful and exceptional FBSC meeting!
The Florida Baptist State Convention meeting last month hosted by North Jacksonville Baptist Church was a wonderful and exceptional experience for Florida Baptists.
