John L. Alexander was one of the five men involved in starting the Boy Scouts of America in 1909. He was also involved in the YMCA at a time when the “C” was strongly emphasized. Alexander believed that “no boy can grow into the best kind of citizenship without recognizing his obligation to God.” Sir Robert Baden-Powell, who founded the Boy Scouts in Great Britain in 1908, wrote, “Scouting is nothing less than applied Christianity.”

C.T. Studd, the missionary to China and Africa, once said, “The light that shines farthest shines brightest nearest home.” If Florida Baptists will do great things far away, they must have the resources to do great things in Florida. If they will do great things in Florida, they must be expanding, not reducing the work, role and budget of the Florida Baptist Convention.

As you know, this year marks the 50th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s effort to put nuclear missiles just 90 miles off the coast of Florida. As a Floridian, the thought of an enemy's nuclear missiles this near our borders is very troubling. This anxiety would have been even greater in 1962 considering Soviet premier, Nikita Khrushchev, had told a group of western ambassadors in Moscow in 1956, “We will bury you.” The Cuban Missile Crisis was a crisis because America's enemy had communicated their intentions for those nuclear missiles.

Despite the difficult economy and job situation in Florida, I want to challenge all Florida Baptists to give 15 percent more than last year to the Florida Baptist Children’s Homes. The following data shows why a 15 percent increase is the least we can do.
