NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)—It’s somewhat surprising that the media is making a fuss about the David Petraeus and Paula Broadwell affair. After all, adultery is normative according to most media standards. This time, however, there is the potential damage of compromising highly sensitive security information. And there are the unanswered questions of “Who knew?” and “When did they know?”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)—The second sermon I ever preached was on the incredible value of life and the inconceivable atrocity of abortion. A local pastor pulled me aside after the message and gave me these words of admonition: "Thom, those are the type sermons that will get you in trouble. You need to stay away from them if you want to have a long ministry."

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)—I had an extended conversation with a pastor of a church this past week. The topic was not that different from those I’ve had with church leaders for nearly 25 years. The pastor’s words were similar to those I’ve heard repeated hundreds of times: “We have a pretty good front door with a healthy number of guests. And we’ve had a steady increase in our number of new members. Our problem is really not the front door; it’s the back door. If we could just keep a fourth of all those who become involved in our church for a few months or more, we would be triple our size.”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)—My relatives have told me that the Rainer family was a slave-owning family going into the Civil War. I have no reason to doubt that sobering reality, though I have not verified it myself. I do know that I am among several generations of Rainers who grew up in south Alabama, just 45 miles south of Montgomery, the capital of the Confederacy.

On December 27, 2010, one of my favorite people in the world went to be with the Lord. Mrs. Nell Bruce had anticipated this homecoming almost all of her 90 years. Her relationship with her Lord was close and vibrant because she had conversations with him on an ongoing basis.

The hour is late. I have been involved in seemingly nonstop
in matters of my denomination’s annual convention. My inclination was to refrain from writing further about the Southern Baptist Convention. I am not smart enough to add any further insights to the volumes already written.
